On September 26, 2024, South Korean lawmakers passed a bill that would criminalize the possession and viewing of deepfakes with explicit content, Reuters reports.

Violators can receive up to three years in prison or a fine of up to 30 million won (22.6 thousand dollars). The bill must be approved by President Yoon Seok-yeol to take effect.

Currently, creating such materials with the intention of distributing them is punishable by up to five years in prison or a fine of 50 million won.

According to the Yonhap agency, since the beginning of the year the police have received more than 800 complaints about the creation of deepfakes. It is also reported that in Telegram Messenger there are chats where said content is actively distributed.

In early September, South Korean police charged Telegram Corporation with complicity in sexual crimes. An internal investigation was launched against the courier.
