According to Newman, studies of the carbon footprint of cars tend to ignore the role of older cars. Meanwhile, second-hand cars sold from the UK to poor countries have 13-17% more carbon dioxide emissions and 53% more nitrogen oxide emissions than cars remaining in the country. At the same time, the fuel efficiency of the cars sold is 9% lower.
A team of scientists examined 1.3 million documents relating to mandatory annual inspections of British cars from 2005 to 2021. Comparing them with the government database on emissions and fuel efficiency of exported used cars showed that 98% of such vehicles did not meet Euro-6 standards, while 42% were even below the Euro-4 standard.
