Trials have been ongoing since 2020. VirnetX is called a patent troll because the company applies for patents solely to benefit from them and sues companies that allegedly infringe them. This may be due to the large number of patents filed or because the documents have vague terminology to cover many use cases.

Initially, VirnetX managed to convince the court and sued Apple for approximately $ 500 million, but in March 2023, Yabloko filed an appeal and managed to reconsider the case. In response, VirnetX filed an appeal that convinced the court of Apple’s guilt, but the Supreme Court did not side with the patent troll.
