This Monday, during MWC 2024, Qualcomm introduced its new 5G Snapdragon X80 modem. It is the first 5G chip for mobile devices that is fully integrated with communications via NB-NTN satellites (non-terrestrial networks).

The part is the third generation of the AI-based chip and a direct evolution of the Snapdragon X75, which was released about a year ago. Despite having the same sub-6GHz transceiver and 10Gbps download and 3.5Gbps upload speeds as the previous generation, the X80 promises greater efficiency.

Its differentiators include having a 6-antenna architecture for smartphones, six times more carrier aggregation (a technique that combines various frequencies to offer more bandwidth), and artificial intelligence to expand the range of mmWave waves.

Artificial intelligence actually remains an important part of the 5G modem family. Based on the 2nd generation Qualcomm AI processor, the X80 features a custom tensor processor that promises to improve data transmission speed, latency, coverage, provide greater location accuracy and spectrum and energy efficiency of the device.

In addition to smartphones, the modem will be used in laptops, cars, mixed reality devices, industrial devices, private networks, IoT devices (internet of things) and more.

Qualcomm also reported that the Snapdragon X80 will offer gigabit-level 5G connections for devices priced below US$99 (around R$490 at current price). The first commercial devices to be equipped with a modem are expected to be released in the second half of 2024..
