This week on the streaming service, Amazon Prime Video presented Yorgos Lanthimos’ film “The Unfortunate” starring Emma Stone and Willem Dafoe.

We couldn’t ignore the new product, since the film is competing for 11 (!) Oscars at once. We looked and were impressed by what we saw.

I’ll tell you why the picture will appeal to representatives of the Academy of American Arts and Sciences, but is unlikely to please the average viewer. The highly controversial movie is not for everyone.

This is an absurd parable

The film is based on the novel of the same name by Scottish writer Alasdair Gray, which was published in 1992. This work is a mixture of humor, social criticism and philosophical reflection.

The plot centers on the coming-of-age story of the main character, Bella Baxter. This character was created by Dr. Godwin Baxter. The doctor gave her life by living in her body with someone else’s brain.

Throughout the film, the tracks followed Bella’s journey through the world filled with danger, mystery and discovery, starting from the moment of her “birth”. At the beginning of the story, she was an undeveloped and innocent person, but as the plot develops, she begins to explore countries and a cruel world, discovering new boundaries for the development of her personality.

The synopsis sounds Interesting, although we have, of course, already seen similar stories. But what director Yorgos Lanthimos did is unlikely to remain indifferent.

Eccentric, mysterious, scary and in places disgusting The film evokes a wide range of emotions and many questions. Chief among them is “What the hell was that?”

At first glance, the story of the resurrected girl and her strange journey around the world seems simply absurd. But as the story progresses, it becomes apparent that there is a deep philosophical meaning lurking beneath the surface. But not everyone will be able to dig it up. The director organized it too deeply.

In general, the film can be briefly described – a parable that draws attention to the hypocrisy of society. But the problem is that the director is trying to make fun of so many social problems that you simply stop understanding the author’s message at one point or another.

The history of particular importance in providing the material is emphasized. It features a steampunk setting and fantastic use of color in the event, as well as a black and white first act that depicts Bella’s childhood.

The film also makes frequent use of extremely wide angle shots, which creates the feeling of a strange adjustment to a crazy scene. This amazing film has an unpredictability of atmosphere and sometimes it seems as if the vision is inside a madhouse, watching what is happening.

This is a coming of age story

At first, the frankly dumb, clumsy Bella looks like a bad female version of Sharikov from the famous “Heart of a Dog.” But the viewer does not receive the expected satire. Instead, the director offers a story of the development of a woman’s sexual fascination.

If in the first half hour the heroine simply learns new words, learns to walk like an ordinary person, eat normally, then when it comes to studying her own body, the plot suddenly changes direction.

The main character of the whole Bella develops and sees the world in its beauty and horror. As it turns out, here you can simply play on contrast, adding a shocking note of depravity to the story.

But if you watch Lanthimos’s projects, “The Lobster” or “The Killing of a Sacred Deer,” then you can guess that the author will not show anything good or pleasant even in this seemingly intimate, bright theme of a girl’s growing up. And I’ll be right.

The older the main character of the film gets, the more trashy and depraved images the viewer will see of the future hero. The development of the heroine’s sexuality leads her to a brothel. How do you like this turn? With this movie permeated with the ideas of feminism.

It sounds like nonsense, but this is a strange mix of the author’s ideas. Bella simply exercises control over herself, her desires and the boundaries of what is permitted, which leads to unexpected consequences that cause a whole range of emotions.

Many scenes may come as a shock to viewers who are not used to seeing A-list actors in such scenes. Emma Stone gave it her all. Her character turned out to be as crazy as the entire plot of the story. This may be the best role of her career because we witness her character’s unexpected transformation.

It’s a top contender for the women’s Oscars this year.

But here is a brave new world and an unexpected ending.

What you might like about the film is its unusual and strange world setting of the retro-futuristic era of the late 19th century. Everything seemed to come out of some fantastic children’s fairy tale. Steampunk elements and vibrant interior and costume design make the film unique.

All of the film’s visual elements, from the interior design to the costume details, emphasize the strangeness and mystery of its world.

Well, the final part of the surprise may please a few cynical people who twist the film’s early mysteries into even stranger forms. This, of course, does not produce a “wow” effect, but it slightly smoothes out the consequences of the madness that is happening.

Watch, but not for everyone

The film won the main prize at the Venice Film Festival and the Golden Globe. This is expected, since critics love such complex author’s projects. But to a simple viewer, what is happening on the screen seems too grotesque, and in some places simply disgusting.

An unusual exploration of society and the place women and sex occupy in it, it is shown in a very grotesque and dark way, albeit in bright colors. The plot may seem too far-fetched and incomprehensible, and some moments the appearance may be provocative or even offensive.

In other words, a unique movie not for everyone, shot in an insanely eccentric arthouse style.
