A team of more than 40 moderators from Google contractor Cognizant in Austin, Texas, was responsible for approving music content for YouTube Music. They went on strike last February to demand changes to return-to-work policies.
Google says the decision to cut the team was Cognizant’s, not theirs. According to Google spokesperson Courtney Mencini, “Contracts with our suppliers across the country expire regularly in accordance with their natural end dates.”
Contract workers demanded fair working conditions, arguing that most of those hired to work remotely were paid as little as $19 per hour, making the office prohibitively expensive for them.
