SESRI, also called the “Earth space station,” is capable of simulating vacuum, high and low temperatures, charged particles, electromagnetic radiation and other factors. It covers an area the size of approximately 50 football fields and can be customized to meet the specific requirements of scientific and engineering research.
The facility was designed to ensure the safe operation of space vehicles, support people’s long-term stay in space, and improve their capabilities in special and extreme space environments.
SESRI began trial operations last year and has already served several major national space missions, achieving significant results. Han Jicai, President of Harbin Institute of Technology, noted that SESRI plays an important role in scientific and technological innovation, industrial transformation and training highly qualified personnel.
This project took 18 years to create, from the moment it began until its official opening.
