State Duma Deputy Chairman for Information Policy Anton Gorelkin said that Roskomnadzor could block Wikipedia in Russia. The service violates a new law that prohibits talking about ways to bypass blocking.

The deputy wrote about this on his Telegram channel. Earlier this week, the Runiversalis service drew attention to the article “What to do if Wikipedia is blocked”, which, among other things, suggests using a VPN in countries where authorities restrict access to the online encyclopedia.
The press service of the Russian analogue of Wikipedia emphasized that “the vice president already has a cart and a small rape cart.” Gorelkin agreed that the wiki article fully meets the criteria of the concept of “popularizing the means of bypassing blocking.”
On March 1, 2024, the ban on popularizing means of bypassing blocking, including VPN services, came into force.
“There are legal reasons to block Wikipedia; the only thing left is to ensure that this does not cause serious inconvenience to users,” the politician wrote.
The State Duma deputy once again noted that national analogues can replace Wikipedia, and experts from the Regional Public Center for Internet Technologies (ROCIT) are working on a technical solution with which, when clicking on a link to a Wikipedia article, the user was asked to open its version in one of the Russian services.
In the fall of 2023, Anton Gorelkin proposed removing Wikipedia from search results for violating the landing law. Then the politician said that Runiversalis and Ruviki are not inferior to Wikipedia in terms of the volume of information, but “they significantly surpass it in quality and reliability.”
