During the discovery, Borisov initially mistook the object for an asteroid, but subsequent observations showed characteristic signs of the comet: clutter and a small tail visible for a few seconds. Information about the discovery was sent to the Minor Planet Center and it was later confirmed to be a comet.
Comet C/2024 V1 (Borisov) was detected with a magnitude of 21 in the constellation Ursa Major. The size of the comet is several hundred meters. It is currently known to have a long elliptical orbit with an orbital period of approximately 3.7 thousand years. The closest distance to the Sun is expected to be approximately 2.3 astronomical units and is expected to occur on April 4, 2025.
