The lead author of the report, Dr. “We often ignore the environmental impacts of data storage and AI tools,” said Keith Hanneman. “Developing and implementing AI models requires significant energy expenditure, and medical imaging data storage volumes are increasing exponentially.”
The study highlights two sides of the artificial intelligence coin. On the positive side, AI can improve workflows, speed up image acquisition, and improve the patient experience. However, the energy consumption associated with training AI models and storing large amounts of data poses a major environmental concern.
Dr. “The important thing is to find balance,” explains Hanneman. “We want to leverage the benefits of AI to treat patients while minimizing the impact on the environment.”
