IRIS2, worth €6 billion, will include several hundred satellites and strengthen the EU’s technological sovereignty. The project includes three control centers located in Italy, France and Luxembourg.
The EU’s contribution to the project will be 2.4 billion euros, with the remaining funding expected to come from private companies and the European Space Agency. IRIS2 is expected to be the EU’s third largest satellite programme, after Galileo and Copernicus.
An analogue of the American Starlink network, IRIS2 is designed to strengthen Europe’s position in the field of space technology. It is planned to reach full system capacity by 2027.
