The center will conduct research in cybersecurity in collaboration with universities and governments in Japan and other countries in the region. The tech giant will also help strengthen the cybersecurity of the region’s 300,000 small and medium-sized businesses, non-profit organizations and other social institutions.

In October, Google warned that the region was “the target of more cyber attacks than any other region.” Authorities, including in Japan, have expressed similar concerns. In addition to large-scale fraud and ransomware activity, the United States and its allies, including Australia, have blamed cyberattacks on China and Beijing-linked groups.
