Writable, which was recently acquired by education giant Houghton Mifflin Harcourt, uses ChatGPT’s AI capabilities to analyze student essays. It aims to simplify the grading process by providing teachers with AI-generated feedback on student work, as well as suggestions for improvement and notes on drafts. Plus, Writable claims it can help design curriculum, create essay prompts, and even create lesson plans.
Supporters argue that AI tools like Writable could free up teachers’ valuable time, allowing them to focus on more personalized instruction and interaction with students.
However, concerns remain. For example, over-reliance on AI can lead to generic, automatic feedback that diminishes the importance of individual student assessment, and the constant presence of AI assistance can lead to diminished teachers’ own competence over time.
A recent US survey found that parents are split on the use of AI in grading, with nearly half opposed to the idea.
