Elon Musk has promised to open source some of the source code of his AI startup xAI. Last week, the billionaire filed a lawsuit against OpenAI, which he co-founded, accusing the company of commercializing an initially non-profit project.

Musk announced that the source code for the Grok chatbot will be open sourced this week. The billionaire wrote about this on his social network X (formerly Twitter). In this post, one of the users wrote that OpenAI should now do the same. To which Musk responded: OpenAI is a lie.
If xAI takes this step, it will allow independent developers access to experiment with the code underlying the AI technology. Previously, six months after Musk’s purchase, Twitter published two repositories on GitHub with parts of its source code.
Showdown between Musk and OpenAI
In his recent accusations, Elon Musk called developer ChatGPT a closed-source “subsidiary” of Microsoft. According to the billionaire, the startup aims to generate profits and not work “for the benefit of humanity.”
The businessman claims that the company has deviated from the course set at the time of its founding.
OpenAI, in turn, published some of the internal correspondence between the company’s top managers and Elon Musk during the period when the businessman was still a member of the board of directors. According to OpenAI, it was Musk who insisted that the company needed “billions a year” to achieve the goals specified in its own mission.
The promoter also accused Musk of trying to gain full control of the company: a desire to take over the CEO chair and a desire to gain control of the majority stake. Additionally, Musk’s plans included merging the startup with his other company, Tesla.
Elon Musk launched OpenAI competitor xAI last summer. The startup’s website stated that its mission was to “understand the true nature of the universe.” The company has since developed a chatbot called Grok, which Musk says will be politically neutral.
At the end of last year, Musk’s ex-wife, singer Grimes, together with the startup Curio, presented the world’s first toys with support for an AI-based chatbot. One of the toys received the same name as the xAI chatbot: Grok.
