During WWDC 2022, Apple announced a host of new features that will come with iOS 16. The new version of the company’s mobile operating system includes a more aggressive redesign for the lock screen, but also “hides” some gadgets. One of them the ability to use Face ID in landscape mode in addition to the standard portrait.

With it, users will be able to unlock the iPhone, pay with Apple Pay, verify downloads and enter passwords horizontally with the device. Until then, the user has to leave the mobile in portrait mode for Face ID to be functional. It is worth considering that some iPad models also have the same functionality.

Which iPhones will be compatible?

However, a detail not yet specified by Apple is about which models can use Face ID in this way. The company only mentions “Face ID works in landscape mode on supported iPhone models” on its operating system page, but does not specify which ones.

But in iOS 15.4, Apple introduced a feature that made it possible to unlock via Face ID using protective masks. This functionality is only available on iPhone 12 and later due to hardware issues, but it’s up to the company to verify if the new tool follows the same standards.

After the presentation, Apple confirmed that iOS 16 will be compatible with models after iPhone 8. iPhone 6S, iPhone 7, and iPhone SE (1. generation) will not receive the update.
