The company announced on its Mi Fans Telegram channel that it has removed a feature that allowed MIUI and HyperOS devices to play YouTube audio when the screen was off.

The changes will affect all Xiaomi devices running HyperOS, MIUI 14, MIUI 13 and MIUI 12. This means that Xiaomi 14, 13, 13 Pro, 12T and other models will no longer be able to use this gap.

Xiaomi cites “compatibility requirements” as the reason. The company did not disclose additional details, but it is possible that Google asked Xiaomi to remove this feature.

Note from the very beginning that one of the main advantages of YouTube Premium is the ability to listen to videos in the background even when the screen is off. The standard YouTube app won’t let you do that unless you want to pay $14 a month.
