An international team of paleontologists used a combination of traditional phylogenetic analysis, discriminant analysis and machine learning to analyze teeth, the richest fossils in the Kem Kem layers. This innovative approach allowed the discovery of a previously unknown theropod (carnivorous dinosaur) species in the region.

The preserved dinosaur remains in the Kem-Kem layer consist largely of teeth, making their identification difficult. While recognizable teeth from famous dinosaurs such as Spinosaurus and Carcharodontosaurus have been discovered, teeth previously classified as Velociraptor have remained a mystery.

This study paves the way for further research using this combined approach for the discovery of rare long-necked dinosaurs, especially in the Kem Kem layers.
