Adolescents with difficult personalities who come from low-income families or are prone to family dysfunctions (domestic violence, socialization problems, etc.) have the chance to start living a better life with the help of sports. True, in this case, an improvement in depression symptoms is observed only in adolescents who move from primary school to high school. These positive effects occur only under certain conditions and depend on the intensity and context of sports activities.
Researchers found that among adolescents with difficult temperaments, low levels of physical activity were associated with increased anxiety symptoms. Moreover, high levels of physical activity were associated with increased aggression in adolescents from disadvantaged families. So in any case, the social context of sport is very important.
Sports allow young people with difficult temperaments to improve their social skills. However, those who face problems within the family are more likely to transfer the aggression sometimes shown in sports to other life situations. In this case, it is important to ensure that aggression does not turn into deviant behavior.
The results of the study were published in the Journal of Early Adolescence.
