Spotify mini player for desktop.

As a person who listens a lot Spotify via a desktop app while working, I’ve always been baffled by the fact that the world’s most popular music streaming service has never had a more discreet, customizable mini player to get out of the way. Well, today the productivity gods are smiling on us as Spotify announces the launch of its new feature. Spotify miniplayer for its desktop application that allows users to listen to music and watch videos while using other applications and windows.

It launches today and is currently only available to Premium subscribers. Once implemented, users will be able to activate the mini player using an icon that will appear in the bottom right corner next to the app’s volume slider.

Clicking it will open a floating “always on top” window that can be resized to your liking, down to a thin basic panel that contains nothing but a play/skip button and an album thumbnail. The window can even be resized and moved while watching a video.

Music, podcasts, and videos can be played through the mini player, and you can use it to select and change tracks, select playlists, control volume, and more. Opening the mini player doesn’t close the larger Spotify app (but you can), and you can switch back and forth if you want. Additionally, tapping on an artist name, song title, or album cover will open it in the main Spotify app.

Spotify is currently the largest music streaming service in the world with 602 million users, 236 million of which are paid subscribers. You can download the Spotify desktop app for Windows and Mac from the Spotify website.
