Nvidia went a little further with its latest developments and created a replica of the Earth that will help create climate simulations and provide tools to institutions or companies.

It could help meteorologists model and visualize global weather patterns on an “unprecedented scale,” according to the press release.

“Climate digital twin of the Earth”, called Earth-2was designed to help offset some of the economic losses caused by extreme weather conditions caused by climate change.

Customers can access the digital twin via an API, allowing “virtually anyone to create AI-powered emulations to accelerate the creation of interactive, high-resolution models ranging from the global atmosphere and local cloud cover to typhoons” and turbulence.

Nvidia claims the new platform is 1,000 times faster at generating predictive images than current models and 3,000 times more energy efficient thanks to a generative AI model called CorrDiff.

“Climate disasters are now the norm, with historic droughts, catastrophic hurricanes and generational floods appearing in the news with alarming frequency,” Nvidia founder and CEO Jensen Huang said in a statement. “Earth-2 Cloud APIs are designed to help us better prepare for extreme weather and inspire action to mitigate it.”

A specific example of its use:

Taiwan’s Central Meteorological Administration plans to use these diffusion models to more accurately predict where the typhoon will arrive. When a typhoon warning is issued, the priority is to minimize casualties by conducting early evacuations based on quality information received by relevant agencies, including Taiwan’s National Science and Technology Center for Natural Disaster Reduction (NCDR).
