If you ask many power users or Linux users, they are likely to recommend the Thunderbird email service as a mail client. The open source service gives you many options for managing your email. So it’s no surprise that people are excited about the recently announced Android version.
An Android version of Thunderbird is already available, but not in the way you might think. Instead, you can switch to the K-9 Mail app, which you can download for free from Google Play. Mozilla, the company behind Thunderbird, isn’t actually making its own Android app, taking over the project from K-9 Mail creator Christian Ketterer. The addition of Ketterer to the team behind Thunderbird allows Mozilla to leverage its expertise in mobile platforms. K-9 Mail then becomes the Thunderbird email client for Android.
Thunderbird invests (financial) resources to develop K-9 Mail. It sounds like music to your ears; It’s good to see two open source projects merged and neither side continues to pump resources into different projects. The K-9 Mail name will fade over time and migrate to Thunderbird. Getting there will take some time and money. The same goes for an iOS version of the app. For now, the team behind the app is focusing on the Android version of the service.
As a Thunderbird user, would you like to try K-9 Mail?
If you’re interested or if you’re using Thunderbird and haven’t downloaded the K-9 Mail app yet, now is the time to give it a shot. Especially if you want to see the transformation of the application and be there when different sections become available. If you don’t like it and you just want to use a complete product, you will have to wait until things calm down and the migration to Thunderbird is complete. However, it is not possible to say when this will happen at the moment.
As a K-9 Mail user, you can expect some changes. Mozilla shares some of its plans on its website through a tiny roadmap.
- Account setup via automatic configuration of your Thunderbird account.
- Improved folder management.
- Message filters support.
- Synchronization between desktop and mobile versions of Thunderbird.
These are just the plans for the coming months; From now on, we expect bigger changes and more options for K-9 Mail.
