In one study, researchers evaluated 172 consumer products, including household cleaning products, for Proposition 65 chemicals and found that more than 60% of the products contained at least one hazardous chemical. Additionally, manufacturers of cleaning products are not required to publish a full list of ingredients found in their products.

There are also products called natural cleaning products. They are claimed to be safer for allergy sufferers, less toxic to the environment and less harmful to human health. So has all this been scientifically confirmed?

Dr. According to Baskul, “natural” cleaning products typically contain plant-based or biodegradable ingredients that are less likely to cause serious harmful effects than traditional cleaning products. But the category itself can be vague, so it’s important to be smart before purchasing any product.

For example, the terms “green” and “eco-friendly” do not necessarily mean that the product is safe. This is more of a marketing tactic and is generally not regulated by law. Many of the so-called natural treatments still contain dangerous chemicals and unknown ingredients.

However, there are also studies supporting the health benefits of natural cleaning products. One such study found an 86% reduction in the body’s exposure to chloroform (a carcinogen) and lower levels of 16 other chemicals of concern. In terms of effectiveness, natural products were the same as traditional products, according to 98% of the participants.

Another study showed that cleaners who worked primarily with environmentally friendly products were less likely to develop skin symptoms affecting the respiratory and musculoskeletal systems.
