A family member used Emergency SOS to contact emergency services after a difficult hike with significant elevation gain, according to a press release from the Clackamas County Sheriff’s Office on Tuesday, March 19. Satellite capability has proven invaluable in situations where cellular or Wi-Fi access is limited.
Although contact was made around 19.30 in the evening, difficult weather conditions and terrain prevented rescue efforts. Search and Rescue teams set out with their off-road vehicles, but could not reach the family that night. Ground crews found them cold, wet and dehydrated around 6 a.m. the next morning.
Helicopter assistance was considered, but weather conditions made this impossible. Eventually, a snowmobile from a neighboring county arrived and, after traversing difficult terrain for several hours, was able to bring the family to safety by 7:30 p.m. Wednesday.
