It turns out that 30 years ago, when porting code from Windows 95 to NT, Microsoft developers created a temporary interface for formatting disks. It was planned to be replaced but… time passed and the “temporary” solution became permanent.

“I noted all the possible formatting options on paper, such as file system, label, cluster size, compression, encryption, etc., and then wrote a program,” recalls Brad Plummer, one of the Windows NT developers.

And for 30 years this simple but functional interface has been welcoming Windows users. It doesn’t shine with beauty, but it does its job perfectly.
