SpaceX has requested permission to operate up to 7,500 next-generation Starlink satellites in the 1.6 GHz, 2 GHz and 2.4 GHz bands. These additional frequencies will significantly increase the capacity of Starlink mobile services in the US and around the world.

The FCC deemed SpaceX’s application “ineligible to file” due to possible interference with existing uses of these bands:

Existing satellite operators Dish Network and Globalstar have expressed concerns about possible interference from the proposed Starlink service. SpaceX argued that they could reduce interference with technical solutions, but the FCC found this to be insufficient.

SpaceX’s broader mobile internet ambitions are on hold until the FCC completes the process of adopting the new rules. The results will determine whether and how SpaceX can use the requested spectrum bands.
