Scientists from Tomsk Polytechnic University, together with other organizations, will study the radiation properties of graphite used in a uranium-graphite type power reactor at the Leningrad Nuclear Power Plant. The aim of this research is to develop methods for decommissioning such reactors by 2038.

TPU scientists, in cooperation with Rosatom enterprises, will conduct research on the radiation properties of graphite in the reactor. For this purpose, new techniques developed jointly with the Experimental Demonstration Center for Decommissioning of Uranium-Graphite Reactors will be used.

The experiments include testing screening equipment and developing techniques to identify radioactive elements in the graphite structures of RBMK-1000 reactors. These reactors are among the most powerful and require a special approach to decommissioning.
