According to The Wall Street Journal, the new feature will launch next week. The publication’s sources report that the company plans to hire more than 10 employees to sell advertising.

According to Peter Sellis, senior vice president of product at Discord, the advertising will be placed in the lower left corner of the screen and will be targeted: ads will be displayed based on information about the user’s gaming activity, age, and location.

To receive a reward for completing a mission, the user must stream while completing the advertisers’ tasks. At the same time, at least one friend should observe the process.

WSJ interlocutors believe that the appearance of advertising can make users worry about the use of their data and cause audience drain. Additionally, the social network’s CEO, Jason Citron, previously stated that Discord will not use advertising to make money.

In a compromise between the need for monetization and maintaining loyalty, Discord leaves the option to disable ads in the settings.
