The Federal Antimonopoly Service (FAS) of the Russian Federation demanded that Apple explain its position regarding the access of Russian payment systems to contactless payments in the iOS system. This is indicated in the FAS message.

FAS demanded Apple explain its position on Russians’ lack of access to Apple Pay

The agency notes that now Russian users of iOS devices “cannot actually use its functionality to receive banking services and make payments.”

Apple, they add to the FAS, has removed the mobile applications of most Russian banks from the App Store and does not allow them to access it. The company also does not allow the installation of applications other than the App Store on its devices.

The Apple Pay system does not allow linking Russian bank cards of these banks, the department lists: “However, NFC contactless payment technology in iOS is only available for the Apple Pay system. This makes it impossible to use contactless payment systems Mir Pay, SberPay, Tinkoff Pay, etc. on Apple devices.”

The antitrust department believes the company’s actions show signs of violating antitrust laws.

The FAS sent a letter to Apple requesting a detailed and reasoned position on the issues listed above.

  • Apple banned the addition of cards from the national payment system “Mir” to its Apple Pay payment service back in March 2022. Then Russian banks began to produce an alternative to the contactless payment system – payment stickers that stick to a smartphone or case and have functionality for contactless payment. Tinkoff, Sberbank, Alfa-Bank and other banks have such stickers.
