Microsoft Edge will finally let us limit the amount of RAM it can consume

Microsoft Edge Despite what many people think, it is a very good web browser. Although this does not mean that it cannot be improved. Based on Chromium, it includes many of Google Chrome’s best features, but also some of its worst shortcomings. The latter is especially reflected in the performance section, where PC versions tend to take up unprecedented amounts of resources.

It’s true that both Microsoft and Google have tried to solve these problems, with more or less success. However, Edge will soon have a very useful and long-awaited feature: a control that allows you to limit the amount of RAM it can consume.

This option is not yet available in the stable version of Microsoft Edge, but may be added soon. His existence registered Leopeva64user X (Twitter), who often shares the results of experimental features in development versions of the browser developed in Redmond.

The feature to limit the amount of RAM that Microsoft Edge can use is currently only present in the Canary variant of the software. It is worth saying that not all the characteristics that are tested there reach the general public, but this one has all the signs that it can achieve resolve a fairly old user complaint.

How Microsoft Edge will let you limit your RAM consumption

Screenshots shared by Leopeva64 show that the new feature is located in the System and Performance section of Microsoft Edge settings. There, in the Canary version, the resource management section is now displayed with two options to limit RAM consumption on a PC. One will only apply the restriction when users are launching a video game, while the other will apply it constantly. Below you can see slider in which you can define how many GB of memory will be allocated to the browser.

From what you see in the images, The minimum amount of RAM that can be allocated to Microsoft Edge is 1 GB.. In any case, the developers warn that introducing a consumption limit that is too low may negatively affect the speed of the software. Keep in mind that any tab with some activity can easily take up 100MB of memory or more, so users’ final decision when setting up this feature will depend on how often they use browser daily.

For now, it is assumed that users can set a RAM limit. somewhere between 1 GB and the maximum installed on the computer. It remains to be seen whether this option will evolve to include fixed points in the slider and make adjustments easier to implement. For example, allocate 25, 50 or 75% of available memory in just one click.

As we said earlier, Microsoft has been trying to improve Edge’s performance in recent years. But it’s obvious that there is still a lot of work to be done. Let’s hope that the ability to limit RAM consumption will appear quickly enough to see its implementation in the stable version of the browser very soon.
