Students from the Institute of Radio Engineering Systems and Control of Southern Federal University have developed a jammer that turns off wireless headphones when approaching railway tracks.
The device’s microcontroller detects the Bluetooth signal from the headphones in their range and reboots the 2.4 GHz frequencies on which Bluetooth and Wi-Fi operate. As a result, the sound in the headphones disappears, and the person should hear a train or a crossing signal. As soon as a person leaves the jammer’s coverage area, the headphones work automatically.
The jammer was developed by order of Russian Railways. The company is ready to test the device on its crossings. For it, it will be necessary to install the jammer itself and a video camera so that the developers can monitor people’s reactions when the music stops playing in their headphones. This will allow you to understand their further action: whether a person, for example, reaches into his pocket for a phone or starts looking around.
In this case, the device only blocks the operation of headphones and does not in any way affect pacemakers, hearing aids and other vital devices. [Известия]
