Scientists analyzed remains discovered at an ancient burial site in Patagonia, Argentina, dating back to 450 AD.
Among the skeletons of 18 adults and 6 children, researchers found evidence that representatives of an ancient fox species were buried along with humans. The analysis showed the similarity of the diet of foxes and humans, indicating their close relationship.
Dusicyon avus, an extinct species of fox, was about the size of a German shepherd. Researchers, including scientists from Oxford University, suggest that the fox may have been the pet of ancient hunter-gatherers.
But researchers believe the emergence of the modern dog led to the decline of foxes as pet companions.
