TSMC announced that it had started the development of such a processor in 2022, and even then it was assumed that the iPhone 17 Pro would be the pioneer.

Now these rumors are being confirmed. Small-scale production of 2nm chips is expected to begin this year, with full-scale mass production planned for 2025; just in time for the fall launch of the new iPhone.

It was previously reported that Apple allocated all of TSMC’s initial production capacity to 2nm chip production. Such processors will potentially find use in future Mac computers based on Apple Silicon, as well as the iPhone 17 Pro.

The next step will be an improved version of the 2nm process, expected by the end of 2026. After this, TSMC plans to switch to 1.4 nm chips.
