The main activity of the new center will be the development of lithography machines, a critical component for the production of modern microcircuits. Huawei is reportedly offering significantly higher salaries than local chip makers to attract top talent.

Their recruiting efforts appear to be successful: They are reportedly hiring engineers from the world’s leading chip equipment manufacturers, such as ASML. Additionally, seasoned veterans from chip giants such as TSMC, Intel and Micron are also being targeted for recruitment.

Huawei will reportedly invest $1.66 billion here, making this R&D center one of Shanghai’s most important enterprises in 2024.
