Experts from the University of Toronto in Canada conducted a survey among 1,811 people aged 25 to 59. All were single or had been in relationships for at least six months. The results of this study were published in the journal Personality and Social Psychology Bulletin.

Scientists turned to the Big Five model to identify personality traits of survey participants. In particular, levels of extraversion (sociability, energy), openness to experience (curiosity, creativity), neuroticism (anxiety, depression), conscientiousness (productivity, reliability) and agreeableness (compassion, respect) were evaluated.

Overall, extroverts were found to be happier than introverts, regardless of whether they were in a relationship or not. It was also more difficult for introverts to communicate with others; this was because they were less likely to find themselves in favorable conditions for this.

Marital status was weakly related to neuroticism and conscientiousness. Lonely people were less likely to say they kept order and got things done. They often admitted to feeling tense, upset, and grumpy. But conscientious people were more likely to be goal-oriented, including getting married and finding a job.
