Emery Schubert, a professor at UNSW Art, Design and Architecture’s Empirical Musicology Laboratory in the School of Art and Media, has shown that people can actually enjoy listening to sad music. The results of this study were published in the journal PLOS One.
103 people participated in the new study. These were mostly music students. They had to choose a sad song to listen to.
The scientist then asked the volunteers to mentally imagine the sadness in their favorite songs being eliminated. As a result, 82% said it would reduce their enjoyment of music.
One of the reasons why people love sad music so much is because of the game. Experiencing emotions in a safe environment teaches us how to actually deal with them.
The results of Schubert’s research showed that excitement and sadness are interrelated and overlap in a musical work. Although previous studies have shown that people enjoy excitement or tenderness in sad music, not the mood of sadness.
