This is a major upgrade, as Google’s current Samsung-designed modems are not ideally stable in weak signal areas and are less efficient at using battery power than Qualcomm’s solutions.
The new Samsung 5400 modem will be part of the Tensor G4 processor. In addition to supporting satellite communications, it is also expected to provide better performance in 5G networks.
Google is working closely with developers to implement Satellite SOS technology, which will allow emergency services to be contacted in situations where a normal cellular network is not available.
To use satellite connectivity on the Pixel Fold 2, you will need to deploy the device.
The Satellite Gateway application will assist the user in a critical situation: it will ask clarifying questions, send notifications to individuals if possible and provide communication with rescuers.
The transition to Tensor processors produced by TSMC is expected to occur in 2025 – it is not yet known whether Google will also change its modem supplier.
