The long-awaited film “One Hundred Years Ahead”, based on the story by Kir Bulychev, has been released in Russian distribution.
I’ll be honest: before the release, the trailers didn’t look very impressive. On the contrary, it seemed that the movie would be at least passable and at most simply terrible. After all, this is a work on which a generation of men grew up.
Even as a child, the film “Guest from the Future” instilled in me a love of science fiction. Today this movie is remembered with fondness and a hint of nostalgia.
So what happened in the end in 2024? Is there any point in worrying? Let’s figure it out together.
This is a new reading. Is it good
What is the movie about: They live in different worlds. Kolya Gerasimov – in today’s Moscow, Alisa Selezneva – a hundred years later. Kolya is an ordinary guy, he has nothing to do with the future. Alice is haunted by her past: she must find the mother she lost when she was just a child.
The meeting of Alice and Kolya begins an incredible adventure in which our main character will have to conquer the Universe from the pirates, restore the course of time and achieve what is most precious: love and friendship.
I’ll start with the main thing. The new product is not a remake or a re-interpretation of the classic. Before us is the film “Based on”, as the authors announce in the first credits. And this recording came in handy.
The film tells about its own story, based on the plot and images with the names of the main characters. There is nothing else in common with both the book and the series. Thus, the authors completely freed their hands and created an independent universe, which could easily develop into a full-fledged franchise.
Almost everything has changed here. The characters look and appear by mistake, some of them have names changed in the previous story. For example, the space pirate Rat from the game turned into Glot, similar to Feyd-Rauth Harkonnen from Dune, the biorobot Werther became a flying spherical bot. In general, there are enough changes.
The story itself did not turn out to be somehow multi-level and ancient. They come here quite standard confrontation between good and evil with the outcome known to everyone for such tales. This is a kind of cross between Marvel, Harry Potter and The Secret Swallow of the Planet (there is even a melodic reference to the latter).
About our ambitions and are familiar with the American cinematic universe to the viewer, even speaking openly from time to time. At the most crucial moment, they will pick up Mjolnir, the hammer of Thor, and remember the travels of Thanos. And these references to modern integrations of pop culture are presented competently, although they look strange in places.
What really pleased me was the not entirely standard role of Alexandra Petrova. I had never seen him before as a movie villain, and also so crazy. His exes combined the gloomy image of “Text” and at the same time the carefree “Policeman from the Rublevka”. In some places, however, his behavior reached the point of absurdity.
Petrov himself coped well with the role, although he overacted quite often, causing only irritation. Just look at his constant vision, with which, apparently, he tried to smooth out the corners of his faceless character.
True, unfortunately, we did not give any background to this character. And in the end, at the most critical moment, he simply does not evoke any emotions. It’s as if you watched the entire film on a bright blank and then decided to cancel it.
The main characters, Alice and Kolya, performed by Daria Vereshchagina and Mark Eidelstein turned out well. more rich and elaborate. It’s interesting to watch real-life characters constantly interact with each other, creating genuine chemistry between themselves, such as between the main characters in Lucifer. You see how they love each other, but how difficult they are and, probably, are not even destined to be together.
One way or another, there is enough Breda in the film. Often the logic of the heroes does not match their actions; there are quite a lot of drawbacks and plot holes in the story. Especially in this part regarding time travel.
This is, of course, a standard problem for any time traveler movie. But in the new product, it seems that they made almost no attempt to sort out the existing tangle of incoherent consequences. Often the characters’ actions cannot physically lead to what was said at the end.
We were first explained how time travel works in this universe. You can move 100 years forward and backward, but at the same time time itself will continue to flow. That is, conditionally, you cannot travel from April 19, 2024 to April 18, 1924 – only on April 19 in the same time interval.
The main plot hole was covered at the end and with a stretch it was even possible to explain it. But other details are simply not connected with the fact that it seems to us that we are only struggling a little with what is happening on the screen. I can’t say more details, otherwise there will be spoilers.
The atmosphere is well conveyed here
A whole group of companies worked on the creation of the project, as viewers are informed about in the opening credits: here you have Sberbank, Soyuzmultfilm, Kino Fund, Okko and many others. It is clear that a ton of advertising for various services awaits us, but, fortunately, there was none. Only at the very beginning we had a small cringe error with the robot rolling only for the Sber ATM. That’s all.
The visual component, in general, was able to please. It is clear that this is an expensive film in which they did not regret investing money. The scenery, staging, special effects – everything was done at a high level. Of course, if the authors claim to be drawn to Marvel, then there is still not enough budget, but for domestic cinema it turned out just fine.
Interstellar, do you love it?
What’s really annoying is the overuse of the word “continuum”. It feels like the authors have learned a new buzzword and are trying to insert it everywhere. A break in the continuum (like the mind of the viewer) – This is a very common occurrence in the film.. Both visually and verbally.
And how terrible the rap performed by Nikolai looks. Perhaps the authors of this result tried to achieve success, but this only causes rejection.
The film is simple oversaturated with special effects. And this would not be a problem if they were all made with high quality. In the second dawn, the Cyberpunk world generally went downhill graphically.
Yes, I said above that the visuals here are strong, and this is so. But after 1.5 hours, the writers and visual specialist seemed to have changed. Everything becomes twice as bad, and because of this picture it is no longer as impressive as it was originally. It was approximately the same in Bondarchuk’s “Attraction”. And it is the abundance of effects that can negatively affect the overall perception.
In general, you can watch
I can’t say that “One Hundred Years Ahead” by Alexandra Andryushchenko, the author of “Lord of the Wind” and two films in the “Ice” franchise, could be said alternatively. At the same time, I cannot call it a failure.
This is a fantastic normal movie that can inspire both joy and anger. This is the kind of picture that looks quite good once, but is subsequently forgotten. There is nothing special about it that you will truly remember.
At this time in the cinema you travel on interesting weekends. This feature of the film works with a bang.
