Lab-grown meat is biologically identical to regular meat. Therefore, it is not vegetarian (plant-based).

The process of creating this type of meat begins with the extraction of animal cells. They need animal tissue or samples that can be turned into meat. The cells are then placed in a cultivator, which is a large stainless steel tank. There they receive all the substances necessary for growth and reproduction.

Growing meat is similar to a biological process that occurs naturally inside the animal.

More research is needed, but possible benefits of lab-grown meat may include the following.

Reducing the likelihood of developing foodborne diseases in meat. Scientists carefully test cells for infectious pathogens, including viruses, bacteria and other microbes. Approximately 3 out of every 4 new infectious diseases in humans originate from animals.

Cruelty-free meat supply. The process of growing meat in a laboratory does not require killing animals.

environmentally friendly. Growing meat in a laboratory requires far fewer resources than raising chickens on a factory farm.
