Microsoft has an advantage. Programming assistant GitHub Copilot gained one million new users in just three months, bringing its total number of users to 1.8 million. They also secured cloud agreements with 60% of Fortune 500 companies using ChatGPT access. This focus on practicality appears to be paying off, with Microsoft’s cloud revenue rising 7%, thanks in part to its AI services.
Meanwhile, Google is still trying to figure out how to turn AI into profit. Cloud platforms are attracting interest from developers, but specific monetization figures, such as the number of subscribers to Gemini, the $20-a-month advanced chatbot, remain secret. Even core advertising businesses could be disrupted by AI-powered search providing direct answers, potentially reducing advertising opportunities.
Despite these uncertainties, Google CEO Sundar Pichai remains confident, arguing that they can manage costs and eventually turn AI into a revenue source.
