The US National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) found a critical vulnerability in the Autopilot system due to “driver abuse”, a misleading name – the word “Autopilot” can mislead drivers about the system’s capabilities – and poor driver controls.
This prompted NHTSA to launch a new investigation to evaluate the effectiveness of Tesla’s December 2023 recall to address these issues. The recall included a software update and stronger warnings designed to encourage driver alertness. But NHTSA is concerned that these measures may not be enough and is currently reviewing crash data and testing conducted since the recall.
