According to the head of the emirate, the expansion will take 10 years and cost about 35 billion dollars. Five parallel runways and 400 boarding gates are expected to be installed and the airport’s capacity will increase to 260 million passengers a year.

As Business Insider clarifies, Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport, the busiest in the world, received 104.6 million passengers in 2023. Dubai International Airport, which receives the majority of international flights, was visited by about 87 million of passengers in 2023.

The sheikh added that an “entire city” would be built around Al Maktoum Airport, with a projected housing need for 1 million people.
