TPU is infused with spores that can withstand harsh conditions. When placed in compost, spores germinate and begin to break down the plastic.

It is noteworthy that plastic exhibits a certain level of self-decomposition even without a microbe-rich environment. Scientists write that Bacillus subtilis is a safe bacteria used in probiotics and does not harm humans, animals or even plants.

This study, published in the journal Nature Communications, offers a promising solution to the plastic waste problem. TPU retains its strength and stretchability even when reinforced with sports. Although large-scale production is still in development, researchers are optimistic.
