Nowadays, the metaverse doesn’t seem like a very convincing and tangible concept, as they try to promote it to us. And that hasn’t changed, despite Zuckerberg’s recent attempts to demonstrate how far Meta has gone in her quest to create innovative eyewear by showing off current prototypes of her.

So one of the prototypes he briefly introduced to journalists can burn their retinas and requires “very impractical” handles to support the weight of a 20,000 cd/m² lamp. This is Starburst (previously known as Opal Fruits). On the other hand, there is an alternative prototype with folded holographic lenses that require a laser that has not yet been invented to achieve a focus that is much easier to master.

The only thing that seems unfeasible today is the Butterscotch prototype, which is a sort of legacy Quest headset, still Oculus-branded, capable of 20/20 visual fidelity. Its resolution is about two and a half times higher than the current Quest 2 screen, and the image captured through the lens compared to the Rift and Quest 2 looks impressive.

The problem is that it’s currently only capable of providing half the field of view of current headphones, so it’s a long way from passing what Zuckerberg calls the “Visual Turing Test” needed to convince your eyes that what is happening before them is really real.

It’s disappointing that Meta has a headset that should probably be ready to ship because the Project Cambria headset is coming this year. It was claimed to be a high-end product designed for “work use cases”, but this follows Meta’s stated split strategy of having two strings of VR headsets available at any given time.

It will have affordable, consumer-oriented successors to the Quest, as well as something more geared toward the professional market that uses the company’s latest technology.

But sadly, nothing seems to have been revealed about the actual Meta headphones you could buy this year. Whether you still need a Facebook login to access is still unknown. But they were probably too focused on building all those weird prototypes to figure out how to remove the mandatory social media requirements for Quest 2.
