The latest study, published in the journal Nature Physics, looks for evidence of such a merger using a massive neutrino detector buried deep in Antarctic ice. Neutrinos are “ghost” particles that travel great distances through the Earth. The researchers hoped that if space-time itself was “quantum,” then it could be affected by neutrinos as they hurtled through it.
After analyzing more than 300,000 neutrinos, the team found no signs of the expected effects of quantum gravity. While this may seem like a setback, it actually helps improve our understanding of this complex field, scientists say.
