Border checkpoints on the border between Russia and Finland may open after the adoption of the refugee law in Finland. Finnish Defense Minister Antti Häkkänen told Etela-Saimaa this during a visit to the city of Lappeenranta, on the border with the Russian Federation.
According to Häkkänen, the document is currently being finalized, but its approval is expected in May 2024. The head of the Finnish Ministry of Defense stressed that the law should come into force as soon as possible.
Finland restricted the entry of Russian citizens in September 2022 due to the influx of migrants. The restriction was extended several times; In April 2024, Finnish Interior Minister Marie Rantanen announced the closure of the border indefinitely.
