The computer market fell sharply in the first few months of 2022 compared to the same period last year. According to a new report from the consulting firm GartnerSales were 7.3% lower between January and March this year.
The main reason attributed to the decline is the better-than-expected performance of this industry in 2021, when many people are still preparing to work and study from home at critical junctures of the Covid-19 pandemic. In particular, demand for Chromebooks in the US market for educational use has fallen sharply as many countries return to in-person events.
When we removed Chromebooks from the list, PC sales actually increased by 3.3% – a figure that is still considered modest and also includes a period when few consumers were spending on new PCs.
market leaders
In terms of the number of computers offered for sale, the top three remained the same: Lenovo continues to lead, followed by HP and Dell. Apple, Asus and Acer are closing the main lineup. The survey considers premium desktops, laptops, and hybrid models like the Microsoft Surface.
Half of the six manufacturers dropped from one year to the next – notably HP, which had a 17.8% drop in units sold and saw the difference for the Dell drop. Other manufacturers’ totals, representing 14.8% of the market, fell 14.1% from one year to the next.
Only Dell itself, Apple (with the upgrade of models to M1 chips) and Asus (a 20.6% increase from one year to the next) managed to grow during the period under review.
