Apple introduced new features for people with disabilities that appeared in iOS 18, iPadOS 18 and VisionOS 2.
Eye tracking
AI-powered Eye Tracking lets you control your iPhone and iPad’s eye movements. It uses the front camera to identify the eyes.
All data for working with the Eye Tracking device on the device. No additional hardware is required for the function to work. It will work in all applications on iOS and iPadOS.
Musical haptics
Music Haptics is a new way for people who are deaf or hard of hearing to listen to music on iPhone. When you turn it on, the Taptic Engine in the iPhone begins to produce a pleasant vibration in this track.
Music Haptics is getting Apple Music first, but other developers may add support for the feature as well.
Atypical speech
Users with conditions that affect speech, such as cerebral palsy, amyotrophic lateral sclerosis, and stroke, can use the Listen to Atypical Speech feature to run a command.
When you enable the function, the iPhone will remember the command exactly as it is pronounced by a person with speech impairments.
Vehicle traffic signals
The Vehicle Motion Cues feature is designed for those who get motion sickness in the car. When it turned on, black dots appeared on the iPhone screen that would move depending on the movement of the car.
Apple says the carousel mechanism can reduce motion sickness.
Voice control in CarPlay
CarPlay gains support for voice control, color filters and sound recognition. The latter function can detect the signals of other cars and sirens, and then display the signal on the screen.
Voice control allows you to interact with CarPlay without touching the screen or pressing buttons.
Live subtitles in VisionOS 2
Apple Vision Pro users who are deaf or hard of hearing can follow conversations right from the start with Live Captions. It will use a headset microphone to recognize voices, which will appear as text on a virtual screen using artificial intelligence.
Apple Vision Pro also adds Reduce Opacity, Smart Invert, and Dim Bright Lights for users with low vision or who want to avoid bright lights and frequent blinking.
All these features will appear in Apple devices before the end of the year. Perhaps some of them will be available in beta versions of iOS 18 and VisionOS 2, which the company will release on June 10. [Apple]
