There are many reasons why it becomes harder for us to get up as we get older. It is thought that over time, the tendons around the joints become stretched and the cartilage between the joints breaks down. Along with tension in the muscles surrounding the joint, there is also a general deterioration in the ligaments and a decrease in the fluid within the joint.

As people age, muscle mass also decreases. This is especially true of muscles like the quadriceps (located at the front of the thighs). They need to help us get out of our chairs.

Fortunately, all these changes can be slowed down. Regular physical activity is thought to help in this regard. Research has shown that people who are physically active can achieve a greater range of motion than those who are sedentary, even in old age.
