In 2023, one in ten Russians who applied for a Schengen visa was rejected, according to European Commission data cited by the Association of Russian Tour Operators (ATOR). The failure rate (10.6%) remained close to the 2022 level (10.2%).

In total, over the past year, Russian citizens applied for a Schengen visa 520 thousand times. One in ten applications was rejected (more than 54 thousand applications rejected). By comparison, in 2019 the percentage of denials was 1.5% of 4.2 million applications from Russians.

In 2023, the share of multivisas received by Russians especially decreased. This document allows you to enter the countries of the Schengen area without restrictions. Thus, 221 thousand citizens were able to obtain said visa, 23% less than in 2022.

Over the past two years, not only the share of approved applications from Russians has decreased, but also the number of applications from Russian citizens to obtain such a document. Thus, in 2022, Russians submitted 687 thousand applications, and in 2023, only 520 thousand (-24%).

In total, in 2023, the number of Schengen applications from citizens of different countries exceeds 10.3 million, which is 37% more than in 2022. Most often, citizens of China (more than 1.1 million applications), Turkey (1.05 million) and India (966 thousand applications) applied for a Schengen visa.
