Dave Burke, VP of Android Engineering, confirmed on the Android Faithful podcast that this is a tech demo.
He explained that Google is actively investing in virtualization in Android to create a more secure environment. Android 15 adds the ability to host graphical operating systems in a GPU-accelerated virtual machine.
Google chose ChromeOS to demonstrate this technology. “We thought it would be great to have ChromeOS running on Pixel,” Burke said. “It was just a demonstration of the capabilities of virtualization technology.”
Although this is just a concept, future applications of this technology are currently unknown. Samir Samat, the new head of the Android ecosystem, added: “A lot of things at Google start this way. It’s great and makes you think about what can be done with this or that technology. “We are at this stage now.”
